Megan MacPherson has a new identity: Megan On The Wagon. Megan recently, very recently, started her alcohol free journey. Megan was 30 when she reached a crossroads; continue down a destructive path with alcohol, or make a change. With the help of her family and loved ones, Megan decided to reach out for help. What happened next is unique. Instead of hiding out or waiting to get comfortable with her new sobriety, Meghan began sharing her story, from Day 1 (she is now just over 100 days AF) in a blog she calls Megan On the Wagon. She realized that writing was the key to staying sober and she decided to go public.
I am inspired by Megan’s journey and bravery because I think so many of us get caught up in appearances. We hide how much we drink and then we hide the new truth that we are not drinking. It’s tricky. I applaud Megan for her courage. This is one of the keys to change -we have to step forward with courage. There is no getting out of our comfort zone, or out of our drinking zone if we don’t employ courage.
Megan is also unique in coming to this decision at the age of 30 and choosing to use AA as her primary support system. She opens up honestly about how scary if felt to say “Hi, I’m Megan and I’m an alcoholic” and how she is proud to help others overcome the stigma of AA.
We also talk about Megan’s supportive partner and how she met him and her best friend while working in a bar. Spoiler alert – I also met my husband of 40 years in a bar! Megan busts the myth that you can’t be friends or hang out with people who drink, a sentiment that I also agrees with.
I asked Megan what’s next in her sober journey. Like many of us, she is enjoying newly rekindled fun with running and biking and finding joy in physical activities. Megan also wants to continue to support other people in their journey toward freedom from alcohol and to build a career that honors her new ‘on the wagon’ lifestyle!
