Let Them – Own Your AF Life!

What if I told you there’s a two-word phrase that could make your alcohol-free life easier, lighter, and a lot more joyful?

I recently finished Mel Robbins’ latest book, The Let Them Theory, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how perfectly it fits into our alcohol-free journey.

Here’s the why and how:

  • When you feel stressed, judged or frustrated by what other people do – let them.
  • Let them order the wine at dinner.
  • Let them think you’re “missing out.”
  • Let them believe whatever they want about why you don’t drink.

Because here’s the truth: you can’t control other people—but you can control your peace of mind.

Mel says “Let Them” is about creating emotional space so you can focus on your own actions, values, and joy. For those of us living alcohol-free, that’s pure gold.

Think about it:

  • Instead of over explaining why you don’t drink—let them wonder.
  • Instead of saying yes to events you don’t enjoy—let them go without you.
  • Instead of trying to change their minds—let them have their opinion.

It’s not about indifference—it’s about liberation. It’s about taking back the energy you’ve been spending trying to manage other people’s comfort and using it to build a life you love.

And there’s a twist(and my favorite part): Mel pairs “Let Them” with “Let Me.”

  • Let me choose the places and people that light me up.
  • Let me protect my energy.
  • Let me create joy, on my terms.

This mindset doesn’t mean ignoring boundaries. If someone crosses your line or puts you in harm’s way, you speak up. But it does mean you stop exhausting yourself by trying to control what was never yours to control.

So here’s my challenge for you this week:
The next time someone does something that triggers a little AF anxiety… pause, smile to yourself, and simply think: Let them.

And then ask: Now, what will I let me do?

You’ll be amazed how much lighter you feel!
