Hooked on (alcohol-free) Travel

Imagine traveling to a local or exotic destination as part of re-discovering yourself after alcohol? Do you recall what you loved to do when drinking was not part of the ‘all-inclusive’ package?

My guest on Episode 165 of the podcast is Darci Murray, who believes wholeheartedly in “Sensory Heightened Travel”. Darci has been ‘hooked’ on travel since childhood, having grown up with a mom who was a travel agent and learning early on to love new adventures.

Darci is one of several travel agents who are newly focused on AF and sober travel, but she is doing things a little bit differently. Here are some of my favorite things about Hooked-On-Travel:

  • Sensory heightened travel – these are full adventure experiences which allow one to take advantage of new energy and new awareness
  • Dry Grad trips – how cool to offer a teenage experience that doesn’t focus on the ‘party life’
  • Sober Supportive Individuals – your partner or friend can join you even if they are not 100% AF
  • Sober locals – tour with a local who knows their town and the best place to experience everything but the buzz!

For myself, I have experienced a very different vacation vibe since becoming alcohol-free. Now, instead of day-drinking by the pool or sleeping off the night before, I am up early and ready to explore! And, traveling with other sober friends has been an incredible joy. I have traveled to Spain, Hawaii, Tampa, Seattle, Maine, Tucson, Palm Springs and Mexico all without a drop of alcohol and I have had the best of times. I highly recommend it!

Darci is intentional about creating experiences that allow us to be fully immersed in the local culture, and allow us to explore the things that light us up. When we stop taking alcohol on vacation, we have the beautiful opportunity to experience a part of ourselves that we might have lost to booze. She shares some cool experiences that are built into Hooked On Travel trips,  such as:

  • Cooking classes
  • Zip lining
  • Latin dancing classes
  • AF wine tasting
  • Photography lessons
  • Chocolate Carving
  • …and more!

Wherever 2025 takes you, I hope you will check out Hooked.
