The Compassionate Side of Addiction

Compassion and Self-Compassion is critical for your AF journey.

One of the most important steps in our AF journey is learning how to move through life with more compassion and self-compassion. This one key shift can help us to broaden our perspective, let go of expectations and forgive ourselves.

In this episode of The Sober Edge podcast, I focus on three key areas:

  • Compassion for Others
  • Compassion for Self
  • Compassion for the World

When we think about compassion for others, one area we might miss is the idea of having compassion and creating space (vs. expectations) of how others react to our AF journey. When we lead with compassion, we can bring a new layer of understanding into this conversation and find that we don’t always have to get the response we might want. Instead, we might be able to accept that they have their own process and their own timeline.

Compassion for ourselves can be the most difficult. We are so often our worst critics and while others may more easily forgive and forget, we might find ourselves ruminating on the past. With self-compassion, we can explore a softer and gentler approach.

And, don’t forget compassion towards your new AF life. Here are 7 Ways to Observe and Act on Compassion in an Alcohol-Free Life:

  1. Be Kind to Yourself in Social Situations
  2.  Support Others on a Similar Journey
  3. Advocate for Inclusive Environments
  4.  Extend Empathy to Those Who May Struggle
  5. Be a Role Model in Your Community
  6. Honor the Environment Through Your Choices
  7. Celebrate Your Journey with Gratitude

I hope you will consider where you can build more compassion into your new life and pour out more compassion for others.
