What if becoming alcohol-free isn’t simply about learning how not to drink?
In this episode, I’m talking about identity and why I believe it may be one of the most overlooked pieces of becoming—and staying—alcohol-free, particularly for women in midlife.
Alcohol can quietly become tangled up with our identity. Maybe we were the sophisticated wine drinker, the fun friend, the fabulous hostess, or the woman who poured a glass of wine at the end of the day to signal that she was finally “off duty.” When we remove alcohol, we’re not simply changing what is in our glass. Sometimes we’re letting go of an entire collection of stories about who we thought we were.
At the same time, midlife brings its own identity shifts. We may become empty nesters or grandparents, find ourselves caring for aging parents, experience changes in our marriages or careers, or simply realize that the roles that defined us for decades don’t quite fit anymore.
I’ll share how my own Know Yourself, Grow Yourself, Love Yourself, Be Yourself framework can help us explore what’s underneath those roles and reconnect with the qualities that have always been part of us. We’ll also talk about why identity isn’t something we simply decide—it is something we build through experience.
Every dinner we enjoy without alcohol, every hard day we navigate differently, every new experience we say yes to becomes another piece of evidence: This is who I am now.
I’ll leave you with a few questions to consider:
Who am I becoming without alcohol?
What is possible for me?
What evidence am I creating for the woman I’m becoming?
