Worth Fighting For

What if a healthy relationship isn’t one without conflict, but one where we’re willing to work through the hard stuff?

In this episode of The Sober Edge, I’m exploring an intriguing idea inspired by Priya Parker’s new book, The Art of Fighting. While I’m still waiting for my copy to arrive, I’ve been listening to conversations with Priya and thinking about how her work connects to becoming and living alcohol-free.

For many of us, alcohol was a way to avoid uncomfortable conversations, soothe hurt feelings, or keep the peace. But when we stop drinking, we may discover that the patterns we’ve developed around conflict are still very much alive.

I share how my own alcohol-free journey revealed some difficult truths about my marriage, why learning to use my voice became such an important part of my growth, and how we can begin to approach disagreement with more intention, compassion, and curiosity.

We’ll explore the internal battles that often accompany alcohol freedom, the changing dynamics of our relationships, and how our nervous system responds when conversations become uncomfortable. We’ll also consider an important question: Which relationships are worth investing in, and which might we be ready to release?

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why avoiding conflict isn’t necessarily the same as having a healthy relationship.

  • How asking better questions can change the conversation we have with ourselves.

  • The cost of keeping the peace by silencing our own needs.

  • Why alcohol freedom can change our marriages, friendships, and social circles.

  • How to notice discomfort without immediately reacting to it.

  • Why some relationships are worth working through and others may have run their course.

Inside the episode I’ll leave you with three simple questions to help you explore the conversations, boundaries, and relationships that matter most in your own life.

Because building a life we don’t want to escape from includes learning how to show up for ourselves and the people we love.
